Classes
SIO 103 - Introduction to Geophysics
An introduction to the structure and composition of the solid Earth. Topics include seismology, gravity and magnetic fields, high-pressure geophysics, and concepts in geodynamics. Emphasis is on global geophysics, i.e., on the structure and evolution of the planet. Example syllabus
Taught annually, next offering fall quarter 2023
SIOG 221 - Plate Tectonics in Practice
Builds upon classic concepts in plate tectonics, with an emphasis on practical implementation of tools that are applicable to a wide range of Earth science problems. Topics include plate reconstructions, quantitative seafloor analysis, potential field methods, and earthquake data analysis. Includes an introduction to shell scripting, the Generic Mapping Tools (GMT), and LaTeX. Example syllabus
Taught in alternate years, next offering spring quarter, 2024
SIOG 200C - Geophysics Research Skills III: Reading, Understanding, and Synthesis
In this course, students will read classic and recent papers revolving around two scientific themes. The context and presentation style of the papers are discussed and analyzed. Example syllabus
